University of Missouri-Columbia (MU)

  • Coordinate and negotiate space assignments and re-assignments with Deans, Directors, Administrators, Department Chairs and faculty at MU which includes the Health Sciences Center.
  • Serve as the representative for space to Central Administration by negotiating space assignments and re-assignments.
  • Serve as a voting member of the Capital Review Committee (CRC), providing the Committee with recommended assignments and reassignments of space at MU and the UM System. Implement space decisions that have been made by the Capital Review Committee by informing all related parties of said space decisions. Also, supervise the maintenance of all the current and historical CRC files and make these files available over the web for future campus retrieval.
  • Determine and assemble the annual salary and wage and operating budget for Space Planning and Management including the final decisions on salary adjustments and promotion within the office.
  • Participate in the development of the MU Master Plan and serve on the decision making body for this process.
  • Chair the Advisory Committee on Space, a Sub-Committee of the Capital Review Committee, consisting of representatives from the Faculty Council, Staff Council, Dean’s Council and Associate Dean’s Council.
  • Coordinate the centrally scheduled classroom renovations for each upcoming Summer.
  • Assist the Chancellor and Provost as needed in resolving space-related issues at MU which includes the Health Sciences Center.
  • Supervise 15 staff employees, 10 full-time staff and 5 part-time students.
  • Manage one general operating account, two recharge accounts and several state and federal grants.
  • Supervise, coordinate and conduct all space programming studies at the request of the Chancellor and Provost for MU.
  • Supervise and coordinate the Archibus MU space inventory system and all floor plans for MU. The Archibus space inventory system has 50,000 plus records and about 2,000 floor plans, which totals over 16 million gross square feet.
  • Supervise and coordinate the gathering of space data necessary for Indirect Cost reimbursements, Medicare/Medicaid cost reimbursements and building replacement cost values for MU.
  • Served as team leader for the redesign of the Asset Management module within PeopleSoft for the University of Missouri System.
  • Supervise and coordinate the mapping efforts at MU including the establishment of a Geographical Information System (GIS). The GIS System has over 19,000 acres of land tracked which are located at 37 sites throughout Missouri.
  • Supervise and coordinate four space related studies.
    • One study utilizing payroll data that determines the office space needs at MU.
    • One study utilizing payroll data that determines the research space needs at MU.
    • One study utilizing the student information system data that determines the instructional space needs for MU.
    • One study utilizing space inventory data and floor plans for determining the indirect cost and Medicare/Medicaid costs for MU.
  • Serve as a voting member of the Chancellor’s Enrollment Management Committee, the Campus Greenhouse Committee, the 800 NMR Committee and the Care for Use of Laboratory Animals Committee. Also serve as an ex-officio member on the Campus Planning Committee for Grounds and Maintenance.
  • Supervise the Building and Infrastructure Archives at MU. This role includes supervising the staff and automation of all the as-builts, shop drawings, legal documents, etc., for all buildings at MU including the UM system dating back to the mid 1800’s. This assignment also includes the gathering, tracking and categorizing of historic preservation data for MU.
  • Serve as the administrative technical support contact for AutoCad at MU.
  • Chair a group of division representatives on space and facilities planning for MU entitled the Space Utilization Coordinators.
  • Review and approve all construction projects prior to the hiring of consultants for MU.

  • Served as project director on the implementation of the UIC Space Projections Model for both the traditional academic campus and UIC's Health Professions campus that includes a comprehensive academic Health Sciences Center and teaching hospital and clinics.   • Developed plans for the allocation and reallocation of space for all departments, colleges, and Vice Chancellors on campus including the Medical Center.
  • Assisted in the development of the UIC capital budget, through the determination of physical facilities required, the production of program statements and the management of locally and state funded projects.
  • Supported the management of leases through the determination and negotiation of physical facilities required with non-university building owners.
  • Directly managed and supervised an administrative assistant and a staff of four full-time employees which also included several part-time students.

August 2006 - Invited by the National Collegiate CADD Conference (NCCC) to serve as the Executive Director for hosting this conference at MU in August 2006. This event will draw hundreds of facilities and space management employees from across the country to MU.

August 2005 – Invited to speak at the upcoming 2005 National Collegiate CADD Conference at Iowa State University, the topics are yet to be determined.

April 2005 – Received the “Distinguished Author Award” from Archibus Incorporated for the many facilities and space management articles that have been written in 2004.

March 2005 – Invited to speak at the Tradeline Incorporated Facilities Management Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida on the topic of “ The University of Missouri’s Automated Space Management System for Science-Driven Programs”.

March 2005 – Invited to speak at the Central Association of Physical Plant Administrators (CAPPA) conference in San Antonio, Texas. The presentation topic was “The Power of Integrating Processes and Technologies in Higher Education.”

February 2005 – Won the “Osmond Overby Award” from Missouri Preservation regarding the “MU in Brick and Mortar” project. The award was presented in February 2005 in the Jefferson City Capital Rotunda. I also received an Honorary Resolution by the Missouri House and Senate Chambers. These resolutions were presented to me by Representative Judy Baker and Senator Chuck Graham.

January 2005 – Wrote an article about the Space Planning and Facilities Management activities at MU for the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) entitled “Space Planning and Management at MU”.

October 2004 – Wrote an article for the Abbey Newsletter regarding the presentation of library archival materials entitled “Integration and Automation of Archive Documents”. The article focused on the digitization of archival materials at MU under my direction.

August 2004 - Invited to speak at the 2004 National Collegiate CADD Conference at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Chaired a panel of experts in space planning, facilities management and document management from across the country and presented the topics of “Realistic Cost Benefits thru System Integrations in Higher Education” and “Changing the Thought and Perception Regarding the Acquisition of Facilities Management Funding”.

July 2004 – Received a second grant from the State of Missouri/Secretary of State, Matthew Blunt, for the Development of a Historic Preservation Database for MU in collaboration with the MU Libraries on Campus. Grant award is $27,000. The grant title is “MU Brick and Mortar – Phase II”.

April 2004 – Received the “Platinum Circle Award” from Archibus for Excellence in planning for higher education.

April 2004 – Nominated for the MU Human Rights and Diversity Enhancement Awards.

April 2004 – Invited to serve on a panel at the Archibus International Conference in Boston, MA. The topic is “Serving Multiple Masters (Higher Education and Health Care)”. Also, present the topic of “Cost Savings Benefits Through Implementing Archibus via the World Wide Web”.

March 2004 – The internet scout project or “Scout Report” (scout.wisc.edu) has published a rave review of the “MU in Brick and Mortar” grant project for which I served as the P.I.
